‘Moneyball’ Seems Like it Could be Awesome

Over the course of my 27 years on this planet, my interest in baseball has gone from a strong “Very Interested”, where I collected baseball cards and played little league to a weak “Remember Rookie of the Year?  That movie was the best baseball movie ever!”  After doing some light internet reading, I came across a wealth of information regarding Moneyball, which to many is the reason why Brad Pitt shaved off that funny beard.

Doesn’t he look like Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses?

Moneyball is adapted from the non-fiction book by Michael Lewis with the similar title “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game“. Lewis is a bit of a hot commodity after having one of his other books adapted quite successfully to the screen.  “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game“, if you remember anything about the past year, became The Blind Side, which was nominated for Best Picture and got Sandra Bullock a Best Actress Oscar.  Moneyball follows the story of Oakland A’s manager, Billy Beane (Pitt), as he uses statistical analysis to generate a dream-team.

This film basically has all of the ingredients for success.  Maybe it will be even better than Rookie of the Year, but I doubt it.

Moneyball will also star Jonah Hill, Robin Wright and Philip Seymour Hoffman.  The latter has worked recently with director Bennett Miller on Capote.  Miller also directed The Cruise, a documentary following Timothy “Speed” Levitch, a quirky NYC tour guide.  Everybody should see The Cruise.

I don’t follow baseball but I love a good baseball movie. This sounds like it could be a great one, although maybe not as much about the actual game or players but more about the business. As for great baseball movies (other than Rookie Of The Year, which is awesome), some of my favorites are: Eight Men Out, A League Of Their Own, Major League, and of course, Field Of Dreams. I also remember enjoying The Babe.
