Rumor or Truemor? Joaquin Phoenix to play The Incredible Hulk.

Posted by Jon Wiener on July 12, 2010

The last time I saw Joaquin Phoenix, he appeared on Letterman with a gigantic beard and was going on and on about quitting movies and starting a rapping career.  This snowballed into YouTube videos of amateur hip-hop shows featuring J. Phoen with none other than Casey Affleck behind the camera.  Supposedly, the two have been working on a documentary.  Regardless, that’s the last of Phoenix that I have seen.

Supposedly, Marvel Comics has confronted Phoenix regarding the gaping casting hole in the new Avengers movie.  Last week, it was confirmed the Edward Norton would not be reprising his role as The Incredible Hulk in the film due to financial reasons.

It is unknown what will happen with Phoenix and The Avengers, but it would be kinda cool if it did happen.  I just hope he has that gnarly beard.  It would certainly be a new side of Bruce Banner.

I read a statement from Marvel Films saying that they were looking for more of a team player, which is why Norton wasn’t coming back as The Hulk. While I’m sure money was a major factor, and I’m a big Norton fan, I have no trouble believing that he didn’t exactly project the “all for one” attitude. Aside from Robert Downey Jr, they haven’t really cast any other big names as other heroes. Chris Evans (Capt. America) isn’t exactly A-list, nor is Chris Hernsworth (Thor). The other big names involved, such as Sam Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, don’t have reputations for being difficult. That said, I could see Joaquin Phoenix play Banner really damn well, but I think the last time he was part of an ensemble was in PARENTHOOD. So unless he plans on going back to being Leaf Phoenix, I’d be surprised to see him in AVENGERS.
