‘The Avengers’ cast list is official! What do YOU think?

If you’ve been on the internet in the past few days, you probably already know that the official cast for The Avengers was announced this weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego.  Joss Whedon will direct a cast so impressive, it may be reminiscent of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, except with more glasses in the audience.  Who knows…maybe they’ll be the 3D kind.

As expected, Robert Downey, Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man.  I loved him in Iron Man and, despite its short-comings, Iron Man 2.  I can’t imagine anybody else playing Tony Stark.  RDJ totally nails it every time, as I should expect he will in The Avengers.  Let’s just hope he plays well with the others.

Scarlett Johansson will also be returning from the Iron Man 2 team as Black Widow.  We should probably expect a good deal of leather and gymnastics fighting from her.   Johansson did a great job the first time around, so it’s hard to imagine somebody else in the role.

Chris Evans will take another turn at superherodom for The Avengers.  After two shitty Fantastic Four movies, Evans will hang up his Human Torch costume and don the stars and stripes as Captain America.  He will also perform this role in the upcoming Captain America movie.  We already know that Evans can throw on some tights and jump around in front of a green screen, maybe it would be fun to give someone else a try.  Call me crazy, but I think Seann William Scott would have been a great choice.

Another actor playing the same role in two films back-to-back is Chris Hemsworth A.K.A. Thor.  You may remember him as Captain James T. Kirk’s father in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.  Or maybe you don’t.  He died in the first 10 minutes.  Currently in production, Thor actually seems like it could be pretty rad.  It has Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.  How could it be bad?

Jeremy Renner will be portraying the villainous archer, Hawkeye.  Although Renner has been in movies for many years, we probably most remember him from last year’s best picture, The Hurt Locker. Renner was also nominated for the Oscar for best actor.  It will be interesting to see him not only as a bad-guy, but as a comic book bad guy!

Samuel L. Jackson will continue to portray Nick Fury.  He will also continue to wear leather trench-coats.

The role of The Incredible Hulk will officially be portrayed by Eric Bana, Edward Norton, Emilio Estevez, Joaquin Phoenix, Jesse Eisenberg, Fred Berry, Leonard Nimoy, Ralph Macchio Mark Ruffalo! Ruffalo paid his dues in a slew of romantic comedies (Rumor Has It, 13 Going On 30, Just Like Heaven) and has proven himself in more series roles (Zodiac, Shutter Island).  He’s finally taking that next leap to super-hero status.  Fans of the last Hulk film are pretty disappointed.  Edward Norton tends to leave pretty big shoes to fill, and that’s not a Death to Smoochy joke.  At least the next time we see Norton, he’ll be teamed up with Robert De Niro for the first time since The Score in Stone, where Norton will portray an inmate opposite De Niro’s turn as a seasoned parole officer.

So there we have it – closure, thanks to Comic-Con.  Case closed.

Thoughts in brief…
Renner is the man – I’ve thought so since SWAT.
As long as The Hulk doesn’t look like Shrek on steroids, I’m fine with Ruffalo as Banner
I agree that Seann William Scott would be a good Captain America, though I think the script would have to be tailored to his humor and style. I could think of many better choices than Chris Evans, because I hate Chris Evans. Aaron Eckart would have been great but he is the property of DC. Only Ryan Reynolds gets to play for both teams.
Kenneth Branagh is directing THOR, so expect Shakespearean soliloquies. Hopefully Hemsworth doesn’t suck, though I can’t see him making or breaking Avengers.
Samuel L. Jackson is and will always be a bad mother fucker.
